ABSTRACT

Brazil, with territory of 3.29 million m2 (IBGE 2013), is the fifth largest country in the world, and is among the 17 megadiverse countries (Brasil 2012a). According to Lewinsohn and Prado, Brazil is thought to contain about 13.2 per cent of global diversity 1 (Lewinsohn and Prado 2006: 81–83). As Brazil is an emerging country, conserving this important natural wealth has been an extremely challenging task.
