ABSTRACT

This chapter will showcase full cost accounting (hereafter referred to as ‘FCA’) as an accounting technology that can illuminate the hidden use/destruction of the planet’s biodiversity. 1 It starts by introducing FCA and argues that it is needed to amend the operation of capitalism. Arguments for and against accounting for sustainability per se and FCA are evaluated, and existing applications of FCA are summarised and analysed to determine the extent to which they have incorporated biodiversity elements. The chapter concludes by building a simple direct/indirect impact hierarchical structure for accounting for biodiversity and uses a recent FCA application undertaken by this author to theoretically illustrate such an approach.
