ABSTRACT
People like to date the beginning of the commercial use of crude oil to the year 1859. Americans very quickly realised that crude oil could be a substitute for whale oil. The change came at the right time, because the oceans had been over-harvested and whale oil had run short. The novel ‘Moby Dick’ describes this epoch impressively.
