ABSTRACT

This chapter will bundle key results of the previous chapters and relate them to the core structures of capitalism and its drive for growth in resource use and social inequality. Against this backdrop, we will develop a theory of de-growth solidarity as an alternative to the capitalist mode of production. We will do this by integrating theories of equality and reciprocity with a theory of social innovation. The approach will be illustrated by a series of case studies of social innovation, applying a multi-level approach. This will allow us to outline possibilities and pitfalls of higher-level cooperation, which is an essential element of de-growth solidarity.
