ABSTRACT

In this chapter we provide an overview of the options available and the challenges for the financing of REDD-plus readiness and its implementation. REDD refers to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and the plus refers to the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries. REDD-plus is now a hot topic on the international climate change agenda, and investment for readiness and demonstration activities are taking place in over 30 developing countries. This chapter provides an introduction to the REDD-plus concept, discusses the types of costs for REDD-plus as well as possible types of financing, and concludes with a number of observations regarding the complexities and challenges facing REDD-plus financing.
