ABSTRACT

The transformative processes towards sustainability on a global level have been rather slow and incremental; despite some successes, the overall picture concerning sustainable development is rather disappointing (Rockström et al., 2009). Since the Earth Summits in Stockholm, Rio, and Johannesburg, shifts towards lifestyles within environmental limits, towards fair economics for human development and towards greater social justice have been called for. Next to the macro-level transitions towards sustainable development paths, however, micro-level transitions have occurred at various places. One of the drivers can be seen in global international processes such as the above-mentioned United Nations conferences.
