ABSTRACT
For the majority of the twentieth century, most children experienced professional football from what might be considered a safe distance. Watching from the sidelines would have been as close as most ever got, though a lucky few would have acted as ball boys or girls, and an even more select band eventually signed on as schoolboys to the youth sections of those clubs with an eye on future talent.
