ABSTRACT

Career development is an exciting field to be working in at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Expertise that benefited few in the past, is rapidly becoming available to all who can access the internet. Systematic approaches to career development are becoming a key part of both individual and organisational life. Career development professionals are becoming increasingly important contributors to the world’s future; we are in a position to empower individuals to aspire to live the best life they can. In turn, these individuals create the worlds about them, both within work and outside. It is no surprise that many new professionals have chosen career development as their field over the last few years. What is making our role so important is related to the huge changes which are impacting on individuals’ life, learning and work, and therefore on lifelong career decision making. One of these changes is in practices of communication, in particular the development of the internet, and this change inevitably has implications for all aspects of individuals’ lives, and for the practice of career development.
