ABSTRACT

Three decades have passed since sociologist Arlie Russell Hochschild changed the way emotions are studied. Instead of focusing on the physiological components of emotion, she shifted our attention to the social rules – the feeling rules that tell individuals what to feel and how to express those feelings. To capture the process as it occurs in private life, Hochschild coined the term emotion work; to capture the process in public life – especially when done in exchange for a wage – she coined the term emotional labor. 1
