ABSTRACT

Social media applications have not only gained incredible popularity in the online sector, but have also transformed the lives of those using them. Tools such as blogs and wikis are the products of a significant shift in online activity and agency from developer to user (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010). The new and interesting ways in which people project their identities and interact are enabled by the ability of social media to allow users to create, edit, and share their own content. This open-ended platform supports instant communication to be perpetually shaped by users in a public sphere, producing a sense of individual and collective agency (Dieterle & Clarke, 2009) and opportunities for identity projection (boyd, 2007).
