ABSTRACT

Second Life® is an online 3D virtual world that integrates social networking tools that allow for interaction among its users. It allows users to interact with each other synchronously through the use of an avatar, or virtual representation of themselves. They can use text chat, audio, share images and videos and even explore the virtual environment together. In addition, Second Life® allows its users to create the world they live in. Users can create buildings, move land, and interact with objects and other users. Many educational institutions have even taken to Second Life® and recreated their institutions in the virtual world; one university has reconstructed many of its iconic architectural buildings on their own Second Life® “island.” By creating an institutional island for the university, they provide a gathering space for any of their students and instructors.
