ABSTRACT
IN Rep. 510b ff., in a passage which is too well known to require quoting in full, Plato finds fault with mathematics, or at least with the mathematicians of his day. It is the purpose of this article to discuss briefly the question, What fault?—a question which has excited a great deal of controversy among scholars, but which cannot be satisfactorily answered without broaching, as I shall do, some substantial philosophical problems.
