ABSTRACT

Universities are leaders in thinking and action, with a moral imperative to lead their regions in sustainability thinking and action (Orr, 2004). So why is it that our funds are not invested ethically? Why is all our printing not completed double sided, using environmentally-friendly inks and recycled paper? Why do we persist in teaching that making money is the ultimate in self-satisfaction? In this chapter, we reflect on stories from two UK universities, the University of Brighton and the University of St Andrews, in order to demonstrate how we have found that nurturing a community of values around sustainability leads to sustainability action, and vice versa.
