ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an account of a video-based research project that was undertaken in parallel with the writing of this book. By way of reflection, the chapter aims to contribute to current thinking about ways of doing research through media practices, arguing that the production of a video essay might be useful as an affective account of the spatial and cultural dynamics in play at Expo 2010, Shanghai, China. Entitled Shanghai Expo: City Above the Sea, Country Above the World, 1 the video essay proposes to experiment with knowledge translation, whereby discrete material and symbolic elements are reassembled in video form with the purpose of capturing the magnitude of the event in a more affective and performative register, thus offering an expanded or augmented account of the event.
