ABSTRACT
In the United Kingdom there are three autonomous systems of education: those of England and Wales, of Scotland, and of Northern Ireland. When contrasted with the systems usually found in continental Europe or in North America and most of the Commonwealth, the educational patterns developed in Britain have enough in common to be discussed conveniently in one article, as space demands; but between them there exist notable discrepancies, especially at the level of tertiary education.
