ABSTRACT
The great rise in numbers of potential students represents only a fraction of the forces that make up the ‘education explosion’ now being felt at post-secondary school levels in many countries. But because this component presents itself in the most human terms and yet can be observed and assessed quantitatively, because it also has strong social and political drives behind it, the pressure for admission offers a sensitive and revealing vantage point for the study of national views on higher education.
