ABSTRACT
Since its independence in 1946, the recent history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been conditioned by 1) its situation in a highly conflictive region, 2) its scarce natural resources and 3) domestic social tensions. The regime has proved its ability to survive despite the difficulties; however, it now faces important new challenges as well as the existing ones that have intensified.
