ABSTRACT

This chapter has been prepared, not from the perspective of an academic landscape historian or ecologist, but from the perspective of someone trained in forestry and arboriculture. Moreover the author was brought up on a Cumbrian dairy farm, lives in the Lake District and spends lot of time in the UK uplands. He has also visited the Alps, Karakorum in Pakistan, the Jammu and Kashmir province of India, the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and the Julian Alps in Slovenia. In this chapter I recount some observations and hypotheses.
