ABSTRACT

With the publication of this book we have brought the most up-to-date work on European grazed treescapes together in one volume. As is often the case, however, much remains unanswered and the chapters raise evermore questions. However, we can now consider the roles and impacts of grazing and browsing herbivores in European wooded landscapes, both now and in the past. Chapters written with authority present insights into the history and biology of the animals themselves, the landscape and its carrying capacities, and the ecology and histories of the environments involved. Contributions from Rackham, Yalden and Vera for example, set the scene in terms of the landscape history, the known histories of the mammals involved, and the interpretation of the interactions between landscape and beast over time.
