ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The part addresses many of the trends and issues in Response to Intervention and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. Response to Intervention (RTI) has a long history, while Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is relatively new to the field. Perhaps one of the most controversial topics within this work is the terms RTI and MTSS, along with how each are implemented in schools. The part discusses the barriers to RTI implementation and provides recommendations for identifying a systematic approach to RTI. It examines the role of science and politics in learning disabilities (LD) classification and identification. The part identifies four major issues in LD classification: the categorical versus a dimensional approach, a dysfunctional versus severity model, the heterogeneity of LD, and treatment non-responsiveness.
