ABSTRACT

In this section, we have grouped together structural family therapy, as developed by Salvador Minuchin and colleagues; strategic family therapy, as developed by Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes (but as distinct from MRI therapy, covered in Chapter 29); and several evidence-based, community-focused models that utilize structural and strategic ideas: multidimensional systemic family therapy (developed by Howard Liddle), multisystemic therapy (developed by Scott Henggellerr), functional family therapy (developed by James Alexander and Thomas Sexton), and the University of Miami brief strategic model (developed by Jose Sapoznik and University of Miami colleagues). These models have in common a focus on family organization. All also show the influence of the originating model in this section, structural family therapy.
