ABSTRACT

We first note the tremendous influence of behavioral theory on most of these models. While not specifically a systemic theory, the ideas of behavioral theory have application to family therapy and, in particular, to couples therapy. The focus on skills training seems to be a natural fit with the pragmatic focus of this type of couples therapy. We see an influence on the skills training and behavioral analysis portions of EFCT (Chapter 50) and PET (Chapter 54), and clearly the influence is dominant in the behavioral models (Chapters 51, 52, and 53). Relational sex therapy is less influenced as it seems to remain within the systemic brief therapy tradition (IID). This didactic element is clear within EFCT. These behavioral ideas appear to have influenced all of the models except brief sex therapy, which draws from a brief therapy background instead.
