ABSTRACT

This, then, in brief is the store's skeleton, its cells, organs and tissues. We now want to animate it, to set the body in motion; and perhaps this can best be done by giving a picture of a season's work. Broadly speaking, a fresh chapter in merchandising opens before each spring season and closes with the end of the summer, while a similar span is given over to the autumn and winter trade. The years, therefore, are mapped out and punctuated with six-monthly accounts, each of them registering within their narrow limits the successes and failures of much concentrated effort.
