ABSTRACT
In 1984, only 5 per cent of all physicists and astronomers in the United States were women. 1 What is even more shocking is that women earned only one-quarter of what men in those fields earned. According to statistics from the United States Department of Labor, this represented the widest pay gap for any profession in the United States. 2 This situation is much the same around the world.
