ABSTRACT

The Munich area has always been regarded as one of the most vital economic regions in the Federal Republic of Germany.1 Compared to other German conurbations, Munich has even managed to cope relatively well with the crisis since the early 1990s. It was already an important industrial location prior to the Second World War, with a brewery industry that was export-oriented even at that time, as well as a quite considerable machine building industry. However, Munich’s actual economic boom did not come about until the early 1960s. More or less free from so-called obsolete industries, Munich and its environs have experienced a huge industrial and social structural upheaval within the past twenty-five to thirty years.
