ABSTRACT

The perspective of the author of this chapter is that of the practitioner, although I am now retired. As chief negotiator for Sweden from the beginning of the climate negotiations at Chantilly, outside Washington, in February 1991, I was engaged in all the major negotiations on climate change until late 2001, when I retired from active negotiation. However, as an adviser in the Ministry of the Environment, I kept in close contact with the negotiating scene and also ventured into academia, participating in projects undertaken by various institutions, in particular, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, which uses integrated assessment to support negotiations for the post-2012 climate regime.
