ABSTRACT
Adapting Chekhov: The Text and its Mutations is a collection of articles dedicated to the hundred years of rewrites of Anton Chekhov’s drama. It recognizes Chekhov’s dramatic corpus as “a machine for eliciting interpretation,” to quote Umberto Eco (“Author”) and thus presents a wide geographical landscape of Chekhovian influences in today’s drama. The book considers the elusive quality of the Chekhovian universe as an intricate mechanism, an engine in which his enigmatic characters exist as the dramatic and psychological ciphers we have been decoding for a century and continue to decode.
