Southern California is home to the largest US container port complex, having emerged in the past twenty years as North America’s principal gateway for US– Asian trade. The growth of trade and its localized impacts have resulted in a highly contentious political environment as trade stakeholders seek to continue to protect and expand the industry while local communities and their representatives seek relief from its negative environmental impacts.
