ABSTRACT

University of Oxford biologists are improbable online purveyors of jewelry. But celebrity scientist Professor Richard Dawkins has recently entered the accessories trade, peddling “atheist jewelry” through his namesake organi- zation, the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (RDFRS). Through the RDFRS virtual store, one can purchase earrings, necklaces, and brooches bearing a stylized scarlet letter “A” for “atheist,” along with a wide range of apparel, videos, paraphernalia, and promotional items under the brand banner “I Believe Science”. These items signal not simply an affir- mation of science, but also a commitment to atheistic dogmata, a disavowal of belief in the theistic, the spiritual, and the supernatural.
