ABSTRACT

Since May 2011, yellow stickers have covered the front yards in the more affluent neighborhoods of Bremen, Germany's tenth largest city, with 550,000 residents. The stickers read Watch out! Vigilant Neighbours, and are part of a coordinated federal and state crime prevention programme in urban areas across the country. A few streets away, a local bank and the police promote ‘Assault protection through DNA’ (Selecta 2011). This model project, run by the police and a high-tech company, provides citizens with artificial DNA to mark their valuables. 1 The police, the bank and the company providing the DNA also manage the local crime prevention council.
