ABSTRACT

The international dimension of the centennial events of the First World War (1914–1918), also known as the Great War, refers to different political messages – frompeace messages to statements on patriotism – and a cultural diversity in policiesregarding preservation of war heritage sites and memorial events. A key issue inthis reflection note concerns global values converging in a cross border applicationprocess, in the context of a UNESCO World Heritage designation as “Landscapesand sites of memory of the Great War” (Paysages et Sites de Mémoires de laGrande Guerre).
