ABSTRACT

A central concern with the current rush to integrate mobile devices in the classroom is how prepared we are to do so, both from a teaching and a pedagogical standpoint. As has been shown by the worldwide one-to-one laptop initiative, the mass deployment of a technology in and of itself without proper teacher training or careful, contextual consideration of how that particular technology might be applicable and pedagogically integrated in a given learning environment is worth little. Educators and learning technologists should thus be concerned about, as well as collaborators in, the design and development of educational apps. In this chapter, I share a narrative centered on my personal process of conceptualization, design, and development of a K–12 adventure learning app, with the hope that my own experiences might be helpful to others starting their own journeys into the landscape of app design.
