ABSTRACT

When we get asked about the future of mobile learning, we both have to laugh and smile a bit at the thought of mobile learning twenty years from now. As Kyra and Eli (Charlie’s daughter and Aaron’s son respectively, to whom this book is dedicated) look back on this book we believe they will also share in a laugh, as it will seem ridiculously out of date. Just as when we look back only a decade ago on some of the technologies that we thought would revolutionize education, the hardware and software have moved far beyond what many had envisioned for a decade later. We can now see how apps can change the future of education. However, we argue that pedagogy and practice have not followed design and development as they should. Much like Mr. Russell and Dr. Hughes noted in their chapter, “In five years, #mobilelearning will = #learning.” We need to advance our design and development of apps along with our pedagogical practices, where mobile learning is synonymous with learning and education. To accomplish this feat, we have identified several practices and design features, as well as concerns that we believe are vital to the discussion.
