ABSTRACT

Currently, applications for mobile learning devices are remarkably limited; while we can download the daily news, the latest video, or an augmented explanation of an environment, the richness of a remote learning experience is often lost through the delivery of electronic media. Applications for mobile learning with digital electronic devices can be guided by an examination of current and historical practices such as field notebooks, sketchbooks and commonplace books. Learning through analog mobile devices integrates cognitive effort into engaged activities enhanced by writing, thinking, reflection, drawing, diagramming, and editing. This chapter examines the use of notebooks, sketchbooks and commonplace books in the development of knowledge, and examines other forms of representation in the process of learning and as models for new applications for mobile learning.
