ABSTRACT

Janette Klingner was the oldest of five siblings and began her career as an educator holding “nursery school” for her brothers and the other kids in their California neighborhood. She spent 10 years as a special education teacher before becoming a professor of bilingual special education. As a professor, Janette prided herself on being a mentor, touching the lives of her students through her dedication and support. Her mother noted that Janette “just gave herself to everyone, in everything that she did.” For those of us who were lucky enough to be close to Janette, we saw how she lived her unending passion to address the inequities in education. Janette passed away in 2014 after a battle with cancer. She was a generous friend, mentor, and researcher whose legacy will continue to inform teachers and researchers for years to come.
