ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an explanation as to why GMOs have been a major point of contention in transatlantic trade relations. Subsequent sections review the disparate evolution of GMO regulatory policy in the EU and the US; the major exogenous variables shaping GMO policy among the partners; and the role of transgovernmental and transnational actors. The chapter closes with an interpretation of the findings with respect to policy cooperation and the likelihood of the Atlantic Community reaching agreement on the trade and cultivation in GMO products within the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations.
