ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the planning and implementation of low carbon development in the transport sector in the middle income country Brazil, with a specific case study from the bioethanol sector. Brazil is the world leader in sugarcane-based ethanol, both in terms of technology and in terms of bioethanol usage. For more than 80 years, Brazil has had programmes and incentives in place to foster the national bioethanol industry, to invest in infrastructure, as well as technology and to make bioethanol commercially viable. This chapter aims to elaborate the current status, policy development and the opportunities and barriers of bioethanol in Brazil. It also aims to provide some insights about the future of Brazil’s bioethanol sector. The chapter elaborates the Brazilian bioethanol experience by using sugar cane-based bioethanol as a case study.
