ABSTRACT

The distorted view of one’s body image is a hallmark of anorexia nervosa. Body image and self-concept are central attributes. The criteria for anorexia nervosa includes, “disturbance in the perception of the shape or size of his or her body” (American Psychiatric Association, 2000, p. 583). The centrality of this attribute suggests body size estimation would be a worthwhile approach to assessing body image disturbance in anorexia nervosa (Skrzypek, Wehmeier, & Remschmidt, 2001). The current study used a blind identification procedure to identify characteristics of figure drawings produced by anorexic patients. A reliability study was then performed using the identified characteristics to determine the potential utility of figure drawings to assess anorexia nervosa.
