ABSTRACT

Alternatywy 4 (4 Alternative St) is a Polish comedy television series made by Stanisław Bareja in the winter of 1981–82, and broadcast for the first time only in 1986–87 due to problems with censorship. It consists of nine episodes of about an hour long each: 1 Przydział/Tenancy Agreement, 2.Przeprowadzka (Moving Flats), 3 Pierwsza noc (The First Night), 4 Profesjonaliści (Professionals), 5 20-ty stopień zasilania (Power Supply of the 20 th Degree), 6 Gołębie (Pigeons), 7 Spisek (The Plot), 8 Wesele (The Wedding) 9 Upadek (The Fall). The series shows the life of the inhabitants of a newly erected block of flats in one of a large Warsaw estates located at 4 Alternative Street in the early 1980s. The inhabitants of the block of flats and the problems they have with one another and with the representatives of the state administration present a true microcosm of Polish life then as far as the relationships between different social groups as well as the interactions between the people and the socialist state are concerned.
