ABSTRACT

The authors report on a bold programme set to transform the way students engage with the university and each other as they commence their journey through higher education. They set out the challenges inherent in moving from a traditional distance education model to a style of engagement and a learning paradigm (heutagogy) whose focus is to engage students in learning through and with each other. At the centre of the initiative is a set of new “signature” courses that have been developed in partnership with US-based institutions which will, when fully implemented, signify a creative shift from a traditional paper-based teaching approach to an e-tutor facilitated, self-directed, online learning approach. What follows is the story of an institution and a nation in transition; the hope is that these disruptive educational innovations will cascade through all levels of learning professionals and produce a new generation of learners — learners who are better equipped to release the potential of a nation.
