ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that self-directed learners will inevitably be faced with problem solving in ill-structured domains and that, as yet, we have a limited understanding of how to support online learners as they engage in such processes. The author reviews current research and presents seven strategies that could be used to support the cognitive processes of online learners. She provides examples and a rich commentary on how each of the strategies could be incorporated into our online activities. Anyone who is engaged in the design or specification of online learning environments will find this chapter to be an invaluable resource.
