ABSTRACT

There is an increasing interest in the growth and development of African economies (Africa Report 2011). That interest is manifested in discussions of not only business activity through appraisal of market opportunities but also the role of environmental management (EM) in the growth of organizations in Africa. 1 Green management examines the practices and policies of organizations vis-à-vis the natural environment. A review of EM studies in Africa shows not only gaps in practice and research, but also a lack of theoretical frameworks to guide future studies. A search of the Environment Complete, Business Source Complete, Academic Search Complete, Psych Info, Psychological and Behavioral Science Collection, and Social Science Index databases yielded a paltry set of articles (see Table 4.1). Indeed, a review of studies in the Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa (JSDA) for the period 1999 to 2010 showed only eighteen articles on EM of which only six specifically focused on the private sector or corporations, 2 and one explicitly on EM. The study that examined corporate EM focused on South Africa and how organizations institutionalized ISO 14001.
