ABSTRACT

Strategic curriculum change requires that all aspects of teaching and learning should be reviewed to make sure that each is playing its full part in contributing positively to students’ experiences. Assessment is a vitally important aspect because of its infl uence on the ways in which students approach learning. The following chapter highlights how assessment and feedback are integral to the support of learning and the development of the learner and, therefore, require greater prioritisation than is often afforded. In order to move away from the dominant testing culture and towards an assessment for learning culture, the intertwined nature of assessment, teaching and learning must be acknowledged, which highlights the fundamental role that assessment plays in curriculum design and development.
