ABSTRACT

The concept of motivation can take on different meanings for people, but for the student athlete, it has the ability to help or harm various types of performance. Though the school counselor is not usually the first school-based professional to address issues of athletic performance with a student athlete, knowledge of theories of motivation and student development allow an important in-road to be established within the counselor-client relationship. The Mobilization Model has the ultimate goal of using educational information and supportive interventions to help student athletes analyze their crises and coping mechanisms, by which transitions can be made. Achievement Goal Theory (AGT) is one of the more researched and established models used to aid student athletes motivation and accomplishments of tasks. It is similar to the Mobilization Model in that student athletes are motivated to accomplish or avoid tasks based on the resources and sense of agency that they have to attain these outcomes.
