ABSTRACT

The US is a society organized for war. More than simply acquiring weapons, training soldiers, and engaging in violent conflict, militarism refers to an ideology that privileges certain values over others. These values include hierarchy, competition, authoritarianism, and obedience, among others. This ideology is dangerous, yet militarism is dominant in US schools. Schools are militaristic in myriad ways, ranging from what is taught (or not), policies and rules, to the actual school structure. This militarism is generally taken for granted, which serves to privilege military-style thinking and practices over other more peaceful ones.
