ABSTRACT
Social Democracy is an outlook that advocates state intervention to reform the market system. It is an approach that resonates particularly amongst intellectuals in its scepticism about the capability of market mechanisms to deliver the information needs of a healthy democracy. It insistently draws attention to limitations capitalism imposes on information availability because the market system prioritizes sales potential (trash TV trumps documentary). It is also conscious of the distorting consequences for public knowledgeability that comes from the adoption of techniques of information management by pro-business lobbyists as well as the spread into politics itself of various sorts of information manipulation.
