ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of inclusive education to readers of diverse backgrounds — be they students, policy-makers, or individuals who have a particular interest and/or are engaged in this area of education. It draws substance from various programs and activities of UNESCO as well as existing international legal instruments and frameworks which not only promote education but also consider it as a fundamental human right. What follows will try to describe the important role of inclusion and the potential for diversity in education in general, and teacher education in particular. Subsequent sections will explain the concept of inclusive education, the value of inclusion and the need for teacher education for inclusion, and how to achieve it.
