ABSTRACT

A world population passing seven billion in 2011 and likely to exceed nine billion by 2050, consumption increases, diet shifts and food and land diversion to bio-energy have all combined to place food security high on the political, sociological and scientific agenda (WDR 2008; IAASTD 2009; The Royal Society 2009; Nelson et al. 2010; Foresight 2011). Many efforts are now directed at analysing the current food demand and supply scenarios and food price volatility (von Braun and Ahmed 2008; FAO et al. 2011) and exploring future scenarios of food demand and supply to 2050 (Agrimonde 2010; Hubert et al. 2010; Keating and Carberry 2010; Foresight 2011).
