ABSTRACT

Most small-scale farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continue to have poor production (Voortman et al. 2003), and food production is below demand (Dorward et al. 2004). In the past, growth in food production was achieved through an increase in the area of cropped land, but expansion is no longer feasible in many countries as land has become a constraint. Hence, efforts to increase agricultural production should be achieved mainly through intensification.
