ABSTRACT

Travel and tourism (‘travelism’ for short) is an important contributor to global economic growth, job creation and social inclusion. Globally, five out of every ten international tourists use air transport to reach destinations. The proportion is much higher at long-haul, with air transport being critical especially for tourism dependent land-locked and island countries. Over long distances, passenger modal shifts to surface transport are simply not practical, and for the foreseeable future, air transport is predominantly dependent on fossil-intensive kerosene jet fuels. In the context of the green economy transformation, reducing emissions from air transport is thus critical for the future growth of tourism.
